“It’s not that you have forgotten, you just cannot recall…”I was reading The Star newspaper while eating my brunch, when i read an article about a girl, who scored 8A's for her PMR and was given a prize.
Nothing special at all, exccept that, she didn't have any hands, and she writes with her left foot. She aspires to be a lawyer in the future, and to encourage other disabled people....
This made me think, she is quite strong. Maybe she had the support of her family, who told her not to give up, but not many people would have the will to go on. Most would just resign to fate that they are disabled.... and turn to things like begging on the streets, or working at special centres...
other people might just fall into depression, which makes me wonder...
abled body people, people from the middle class, who are studying what they want, yet amongst them there are depressed souls...
If you look at it, you are abled bodied, you aren't scrimping for money, your life is comfortable, you have a roof over your head, food on the table, clothes on your back. you can run, sing, dance, play sports... yet you are depressed. when there are others who do not have such blessings..
Some where on the globe, people are suffering from malnutrition, they have no roof over their heads no clothes, yet they still live on...
Is depression soomething that affects only urban people? (notice suicide rates are exceptionally high in urban areas, tokyo, singapore..etc) We don't have to worry about finding a living, (not really true actually, we have to look for jobs...) don't have to worry about the crops.. so these gives us too much time to think... or maybe it gives us more to think about, as we aren't so simple minded as to just think of planting/harvesting crops.. stress from work, stress from relationships, traffic jams causing stress, family pressure, educational pressures......
actually if we look at it, there are a lot of positive things, but no matter how positive it is, we feel that the negative outweighs it. Why is that so? why does it seem that people who have everything are the depressed one. (although there are those without everything who are depressed as well..) Why do depressed people block out the happy memories, and only dwell on the sad?? it's not that they don't remember.. they just won't recall.. Refuse to recall.. can't recall...
My answer is simple, people don't choose depression, it chooses them. Sometimes i wonder maybe it's a sort of long term illness (which it is by the way, depending on seriousness)
Everyone suffers from it at one point in their life. Old parents being scolded by their children as useless... but can we forget the 30 over years they spent working to raise us?
People who have just retired and don't know what to do with their spare time at home... if they had grandchildren they would be occupied.. or they could do house chores haha..
Being put down at work by colleagues or your boss... emotionally drained.. there are a lot of reasons.. many snap out of it, some dwell on it. some get serious and thus ends in suicide or at least harming themselves.. Some have thoughts, but still hold their rational mind, and refrain from doing such acts.. i guess this are the strong willed ones..
i guess those are the survivors of this illness.. refusing to take their life, or cause injury to themselves or others.
No matter how bleak things seem, no matter how much they feel that the negative has outweighed the positive. No matter how deep the hole that they had fallen into is, they still try to climb out. Most do it alone, some rare lucky ones manage to achieve a lifeline of sorts...
But when will this will to fight end? no one knows, it could be 10 maybe 30 years from the onslaught of their depression, or maybe just tomorrow.... but this is the way of the world, the survival of the fetous, the stronger one (in urban cities, the one with the stronger mind) survives.. It is the way of the world and we jsut have to live it..
